Horror Movie Review: The Descent

The Descent is one of those flicks, that just takes you by surprise and blows your expectations out of the water.  I walked out of the theater stunned and amazed at the expertly crafted tension.  There is a fair amount of gruesome deaths as well, and not to mention solid acting and cinematography.  All done with a basically unknown cast, and what appeared to be a low budget.  My favorite aspect of this indie film though, is the bloodthirsty creatures and their logical back-story.  I am the kind of nerd that needs a little logic in my fiction, and that appetite is satiated.  Continue reading

Make A Request: Movie Review

1

Do you have a movie you would like reviewed and/or discussed?  Is it an indie film, B movie, or Hollywood flop?  Well here is your chance!  The first film junkie to suggest a movie, that I have seen, will be the subject of my next review.  I have not gone to film school, nor have I ever claimed to be an expert, but I have watched an impressive number of movies.  I also have a constantly growing encyclopedic knowledge of actors, directors, and their histories, as well as a deep appreciation for their work.  I feel that qualifies me to have a somewhat valid opinion on film, and I would like to put that to use.

I have a real interest in participation on this site, and am looking forward to what others have to say.  If a suggestion is made that sparks a lot of interest, I will create new topics solely for discussing that particular film, and possibly review it in the future.  Keep in mind, no suggestion is taboo.  I don’t care if it is your student film from 10 years ago, or a chick flick from last year.  Just leave a comment and spread your guilty pleasure like the plague.

Thank You

Open Discussion: Your Top 3 Playstation2 Games

Image

Lauded as The best selling console of all time, The Playstation2 has reportedly sold 150 million units with, 3,800 titles selling a combined 1.5 billion copies.  There is no doubt in my mind that anyone reading this has played a PS2 before, and most likely has a few choice titles in mind already.  I can’t even count or remember all the games I enjoyed on this powerhouse, and it honestly took me awhile to pick just three.  When the PS2 was first released, there was a frenzy to get what few consoles Sony initially shipped.  That scarcity lead to all sorts of under handed behavior, such as hoarding consoles to sell on E-bay at exorbitant prices.  Once production caught up with demand, this piece of tech practically printed money for over a decade.  Sony was extremely successful at securing major third-party support, as well as pumping out quality first-party titles.  Continue reading

Discussion: Gary Oldman’s Best Role

image

I wanted to try something new and see if I can get a conversation going here.  Gary Oldman, in my mind, is the epitome of the creepy bad guy.  From Leon: the professional to Book of Eli, his demeanor seems to jive really well with these type of roles.   Continue reading

PS2 Game Review: Godhand

image

A long time ago, on a console far far away… Godhand was born.  It’s father, Hideki Kamiya, is world renowned for his contributions to the industry.  With titles like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry under his belt, Kamiya seemed to have done it again with Godhand, but no one else seemed to notice.  It had his signature heart-pumping combat, over the top protagonist, and matching cut-scenes.  So what went wrong?  I’m not quite sure, but I think it all started with the cover art you see above.  That is the original cover art Capcom distributed in press kits, but for an unknown reason during localization, it was changed to this. Full Movie Review: “Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai”

Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog, is a rhythmic tale of morality and discipline, woven into a mafia movie.  Jarmusch’s distinctive style is apparent throughout the film, and every scene feels very personal.  Although, that same style keeps his work from mainstream success, because the average person will take everything at face value.  Each scene usually has hidden layers of meaning that can’t be fully appreciated on your initial viewing.  Let me be very clear; this is not an action movie.  There is some interesting assassinations, as well as a good dose of comedy, but the focus is on the story.  The RZA (Wu-Tang Clan) provides a haunting soundtrack full of morose beats, that seem to fit every scene to the tee.  I particularly enjoy the opening scene where, the beat of the song syncs up with a bird’s wings, as it soars through the air.  This sort of clever use of music and atmosphere comes together to form a very cohesive production.  Continue reading
